The Hamburg recordings were made in two sessions: spring 2011 and summer 2017. We'll take you to the banks of the river Elbe, where we'll soak up the sun in summer and escape the rain in spring. If you didn't grow up in Hamburg or never visited the city in spring, enjoy those rare moments when your shoes and pants stay dry - even during the summer you will need some heavy-duty rain protection for your microphone. An umbrella won't do because of the high winds.

City Atmosphere Hamburg - Recorded at the Dalmankai close to the elbe river
If you look closely at the map (sorry, but zooming does unfortunately not work), you will notice that railway stations are generally good places to hide from the hard rain. Hamburg features a host of impressively big train stations with beautiful halls that are well suited for recordings on bad weather days.

A quick note about PA announcements at Hamburg's train stations: the city should really consider installing a new sound system, as the voices are nearly unintelligible; in fact, we did not even have to make the usual efforts to remove or mute the copyrighted content of the announcements.
Can you think of anything more relaxing than sitting by a river in the city? Hamburg definitely offers great opportunities to sit by the Elbe and watch the boats and the seagulls. As you can see in the pictures, even in spring the weather in Hamburg can be quite whimsical - hence it pays to bring some warm clothing.
Also in the picture is the rather imposing construction site of the Elbphilharmonie during the 2011 recordings. A word of caution to all non-German visitors: do not mention cost overruns in connection with construction projects in your conversations with locals.
You might find that they are a bit sensitive in that regard - the above mentioned site along with a certain airport project are the subjects of much debate right now. Nevertheless, the Elbphilharmonie turned out really nice and is worth a visit.
As we were recording city atmospheres rather than piano concertos, we did not set up our microphones in the concert hall. But we couldn't resist taking the escalators to the visitor deck, as construction at the Elbphilharmonie had just been completed and the concert venue opened its doors to visitors. Good to know: admission to the Elbphilharmonie is free if you get a ticket at the entrance. You can then take the escalators up to the visitor terrace that will take you around the entire building - 30 metres above ground. The (free) view is impressive and the visitor rooms at the Elbphilharmonie are simply stunning.
The City Soundscapes Hamburg Sound Library features a mix of recordings and sounds from this fascinating city. All sounds were recorded in true 5.1 Surround Sound with Sound Devices equipment and Neumann and DPA microphones.
All sound material was carefully edited in 5.1 Surround Sound and with cutting-edge tools from Izotope and Pro Tools. The files contain comprehensive metadata that will help you search for sounds in administration software like Soundminer.
