Civilisation Soundscapes includes recordings from nature and the environment, traffic, street noise, chatter, audience atmosphere, railway stations, shopping, restaurant and theatre atmospheres, laughing, applause...
Civilisation Soundscapes also includes quiet elements like rain, wind and mountain atmospheres. Everything recorded in genuine 5.1 Surround Sound with at least five audio channels.

Recordings of vehicles and cars are ideally suited for 5.1 playback. We are talking about interiors, of course, and the sounds that surround you when you ride in a vehicle. Examples include a street car; listening to the traffic pass by outside; the sound of rattling tracks; a car air-con system etc.
Civilisation Soundscapes features a large selection of applause sounds and recordings of people laughing. These are specially suited for comedy shows and sitcoms, but also for concert and film footage involving audience reactions. The recordings were made during actual theatre and opera performances and contain a comprehensive range of applause and laughter tracks (the audience size, intensity and duration vary, of course).
The recordings in the Civilisation Soundscapes library are mainly background atmospheres. Please see below for an overview of all the categories. The more channels available for playback, the higher the number of possible sound variations. In order to create a fittingly dense atmosphere, you need to layer sounds and atmospheres first.
The recordings on Civilisation Soundscapes are tailor-made for this purpose, i.e. none of the tracks are too dense to be layered. Surround Sound recordings can be easily combined with stereo and mono recordings. This lends even more depth to atmospheres.
5.1 Surround Sound recordings are ideal for vehicle interiors like cars, trams, trains or subways.
All multi-channel Surround Sound recordings on the Civilisation Soundscapes Surround Sound Archive are genuine 5.1 Surround Sound recordings (captured with at least 5 microphones). We mainly used a stereo pair for the front channels, a separated one for the surround channels (distanced from the front stereo pair), as well as a discreet microphone for the centre.
For the concert and audience recordings (laughter and applause tracks) we hung mics from the ceiling. 3 mics were used for the front channels, plus a stereo pair for the surrounds.
For the recordings of the Civilisation Soundscapes Archive, microphones from Neumann, Schoeps and DPA were used. Recorders included the Fostex PD6 as well as the 722 and 744 series from Sounddevices.
